Resilience

Resilience

This virtue is the ability or willingness to recover from situations or events that change one's original state.  Unlike other virtues we discussed, resilience comes into play after someone has been knocked down.  Being resilient means that no matter what obstacles hinder your progress, theres always a way to get back up and surpass them.

I believe this is a virtue because everyone, at one point or another, gets disappointed or let down; what sets resilient people apart is their ability to get right back up after this has happened and find a good in it, or find a way to make it go as planned.  For example, Thomas Edison didn't make a light bulb on his first attempt.  He said "I didn't fail. I found out 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb; I only needed to find one way to make it work."  People who lack this virtue give up, metaphorically, after the first few attempts at making that light bulb work.  Those who are resilient, like Edison, keep going until they achieve their goal, despite setbacks.  Another reason resilience is such a virtue is because all too often we hear our elders say how things would be different if they hadn't given up.  I hope to live my life and be able to look back without any regrets; to be able to say I didn't give up when they was a chance to make something turn out better.

Barbara
1. All determined people are virtuous.
2. All resilient people are determined.
3. Therefore, all resilient people are virtuous.

Integrity

Integrity- The Quality of being honest, truthful, and having a strong moral principle

Having the virtue of integrity is a quality that relates to always being honest, and doing the correct thing in situations. A strong moral principle is a key part of integrity in the fact that supporting your good morals and all things that follow would make someone have integrity. Having integrity can be a big component in life on the relationships with others and your ability to communicate. Being dishonest and lying would be an example of a person who does not have integrity. A person who has integrity is able to make relationships with honesty.
Integrity is a virtue because it allows people to be honest with one another and applies to following good morals. Someone who has integrity will be able to live a good honest life that follows guidelines and does not break rules.

Barbara arguement-

  1. Someone who has integrity is virtuous
  2. Someone who is always honest has integrity
  3. Therefore, someone who is always honest has integrity

Patience

                                                 Patience
Ever hear of the age old saying patience is a virtue? Or how about: all good things come to those who wait? A virtue, specifically defined by Socrates, is an excellent character trait everyone should strive to achieve. This moral foundation of self-control and tolerance is vital to the human character. Without it life is rushed, forced, unrestrained. Taking your time to learn, feel, and appreciate is beyond doubt a fantastic way to lead life.
In order to distinguish it from others, patience can be defined as: a virtue (its overall genus) that implies one has the ability to remain calm when faced with annoying, angry, or suffering situations (its differentia).
Firstly it is inarguable that everyone requires self-control in their life. It is also something everyone works to achieve. Self-control is a product of patience. Without it people lack structure. For example, try becoming healthier as a person: eating healthy, exercising more often, reducing stress, etc. People who have never tried to do so cannot possibly realize the massive amounts of inner strength that comes with it! Telling yourself "no" to some of your favorite foods, getting up in the morning to exercise, taking that deep breath when you are angry-it all comes from deep within you. That inner strength and quiet confidence can be applied to almost all situations in everyday life. Think of getting that big project done, think of handling your future children, and even think of waiting in line! Yes, it is hard and it takes practice but it is insurmountably rewarding. Learning to wait and to just live is priceless. As all virtues are.
Furthermore, patience is an "excellent" trait. When one rushes through life it is as good as not living. One should take that moment to watch the sunset and listen to the music. Life should not be about getting from point A to point B as quick and correct as possible, you need patience to accept life as how it is with all the road bumps in between. When you accept life for how it is, only then can one be truly at peace, with themselves and with the world.
So it is almost perfect at how well patience fits within Socrates definition of a virtue. Not only is patience an "excellent" trait characterized by inner strength, peace, and tolerance but it is something everyone works to achieve-from not screaming while you are in that huge line at the store-to enjoying life and watching things work out. Patience is applicable at almost any time.
 Barbara Argument:
 1. All  inner strengthening traits are virtuous.
 2. All patient acts are inner strengthening traits.
3.Therefore all patient acts are virtuous.

Tolerance

Virtue: Tolerance is a virtue that allows oneself to not force ones opinions on another.

Tolerance is a different virtue because it is the different from stubbornness because that implies that one doesn’t consider the opinions of the other one.  Otherwise, tolerance is the openness to let a person express their opinions, not necessarily agreeing with it or disagreeing with it.  In fact , it is not the virtue of being devoted because it does not mean discouraging the others from having their own opinions. One word similar is considerate but that doesn’t entail a neutral reaction.

1. All people who are tolerant allow other peoples opinions.
2.People who are not do not allow ones opinions and are not fair.
3. Fair humans are tolerant.

1. Not all humans are tolerant.
2 Tolerant humans do not judge.
3. All people who are not tolerant judge.

Determined

Being determined is a must-have trait in my opinion because it gives you that drive to accomplish anything you want no matter what the situation is and if you have that drive you'll be able to accomplish your goals and will stop at nothing, Be relentless.

I think being determined is a very strong virtue because without it, you will stop at every bump you hit on the road but, when you have determination you stop at nothing and keep going until you meet that goal. I think everyone needs to have this drive inside them, it will make people stronger and hardworking. Going with the flow is obviously an easier road and more relaxing as well but, at the end where will you be? If you have large amounts of work to do, you're stressing and pushing your body to do more everyday then at the end you'll feel satisfaction and you'll see results and like I said before, accomplish your goals. Being determined means to be relentless, persistent and most importantly consistent. People say all the time that they're going to get straight A's but after a month they slack off, you have to keep going to the end. Being determined doesn't only help yourself but helps others around because they follow by example and if you have a family and are determined to work hard, they will benefit from that too not only you.

      1. All purposeful acts are virtuous
      2. All determination acts are purposeful.
      3. Therefore, all acts of determination are purposeful.

Dedication

Dedication is committing to task or purpose and seeing that it is completed or finished.

Dedication is a difficult thing for a myriad people to have. Many struggle with committing to tasks and seeing that they are fulfilled at the end of the day.
Dedication is about working hard and finishing the tasks you start. A person can commit themselves to many things: an idea, project, sport, religion, or even another person. People who dedicate their lives to something have to work hard for their ambition to be completed and can’t give up over the little things in life. To be dedicated, one must be ambitious enough to commit themselves to something, resilient enough to get up after falling down, passionate enough to keep trying when it gets difficult, a have enough faith in themselves and their cause to keep going. Dedication is also about sticking with one’s belief whether or not someone is watching. When someone is dedicated, they have to believe that what they are accomplishing is worth it. This belief cannot wavier and must not falter under other’s criticisms.

Dedication is a virtue because it stops people from being lazy by giving them a commitment, fosters integrity, loyalty, and a diligent work ethic, all while letting a person find their own purpose.  Dedication creates strong individuals unafraid to work hard and speak their minds. It makes the world a better place by giving people a purpose to move forward with their lives and keep at it until they reach their goal.
  1. All people who work hard and try their best are virtuous
  2. All dedicated people are people who work hard and try their best.
  3. Therefore, all dedicated people are virtuous.

Compassion

Compassion- is being sympathetic and having concern for those who are suffering and/or misfortunate.

Compassion is a virtue that allows you to understand and feel for those who are less fortunate. Being compassionate allows you to really understand what others are going through and be sympathetic towards them. It allows you to understand them from their point of view and understand why they do or act the way they do. It gives you a better understanding of the world around you and what others suffer through. Being compassionate helps you relate with others and comforts them.  If you are not compassionate people will not be open to you and you won’t be able to understand what someone is going through. Everyone faces a problem or difficulty in their lives and they are always looking for someone to help them, but if you aren’t compassionate you wont be able to understand them and therefore not be able to help them.
Compassion is a virtue because it makes people feel comfortable around you and lets them know that you understand where they are coming from. It makes people feel better because they feel that someone truly cares for them and is concerned for them. Being compassionate shows that you are caring and will make people want to be around you. Having compassion gives you the power to understand the emotions that other people are carrying with them and gives you the opportunity give them the support they need.

  1. All compassionate acts are virtuous.
  2. All supporting acts are compassionate acts.
  3. Therefore, all supporting acts are virtuous.

Awareness

Awareness

Everyone should have/desire the virtue awareness. Awareness is the knowledge of a person's surroundings. Having the virtue awareness is also having a consciousness.
Having awareness is also keeping yourself and others safe. For example I will include two different scenarios, one having two people both not aware and the other is having one out of the two people being aware. Scenario 1; you and your friend are walking to your next class. It is required for both students to cross the street. Both are unaware of on-coming traffic and collide with an incoming vehicle. One or both students could be critically injured or even dead. Scenario 2; you and your friend are walking to your next class. It is required for both of you to cross the street. At least one of the students are aware of their surroundings and stops until traffic has subsided. Both cross the street until it is safe to do so. The difference between the two is that having awareness keeps you safe and if everyone has this virtue then we will more likely to not end up in situations like scenario 1. People need to stride towards having this virtue. Not to long ago the media had a headline on how a father forgot his child in his car. The baby died because it was too hot and it couldnt breathe. If he was just more aware of what was going on, his child would be still alive today. The reason why we see absurd warning labels is because someone is extremely unaware and is unknowledgeable. Realistically absurd warning labels should not exist because everyone should have awareness and if everyone in fact has awareness there wouldn’t be absurd warning labels in the first place. For example an absurd warning label is when batteries say not to consume them. Everybody should be aware that is absurd and just unintelligible, but in fact for that label to exist someone had to try it.
The world would be a better place if all people had awareness.

1.All precautions of safety are virtuous.
2.All acts of awareness are precautions of safety.
3.Therefore, all acts of awareness are virtuous.

Confidence

Confidence

Confidence - the firm trust or belief that one can rely on themselves or others.

Having confidence is an admirable trait which makes it a virtue.

Confidence, or lack thereof, is the foundation for everything we do. The manner in which we carry out our actions throughout our lives is a reflection of how much trust we have in ourselves and others. Confidence plays a role in how far we set our goals and how eager we are to accept challenges, explore unfamiliar heights, learn new things, and meet new people. When you set your mind to a goal, there may be doubts that come about that make you feel as though you will not have success for reasons unknown, but confidence allows you to confront doubt and open up opportunity for perseverance. Without confidence a person is constantly faced with discouraging thoughts. I don't believe we need any virtue more than we need confidence.

Confidence is a virtue that needs to be developed, like all other virtues, but it is very different. Confidence may seem very similar to courage, but courage lacks the certainty that makes confidence. Courage often involves the feeling that one must step into risky, unfamiliar situations without holding back from fear or the concern that one may be incapable, where as in confidence the belief has to be present for us to move forward.

       The Barbara Argument

1. All confident people are virtuous
2. All people who have a strong trust in themselves or others are confident
3. Therefore, all people who have a strong trust in themselves or others are virtuous

All people who are confident live happier lives. Confident people make better, more careful decisions, thus creating a better life for themselves. Confident people have a better perception of self and are more equipped to handle and adjust to ever changing situations, allowing for a more virtuous life.

forgiveness

Forgiveness

Socrates conveys in the Euthyphro that piety is a virtue, a tremendous character trait that everyone should attempt to develop. After thoroughly going through various definitions of piety and the reasons why an individual should have this virtue, I felt that an individual should also hold the virtue of forgiveness. Forgiveness is overlooking mistakes, and being willing to move forward with a clean slate and letting out anything held back. Forgiving is being able to make a mature decision that frees both the wrongdoer as well as the forgiver of all worries. Forgiving one’s self is part of a positive change.
We live in a world where everyone makes mistakes. Not a single individual was created perfect. But as a whole of human beings we all have a job, and that job is to forgive and forget. If no one ever forgave each other and never obtained the virtue of forgiveness we would all be living going around with grudges and anger built up inside of us for one another. The virtue of forgiveness is what allows other very important virtues like love to exist. If humans never contained the virtue of forgiveness this world would be filled with bitterness for one another. Love would merely exist. Yes indeed this virtue does have a hint of courage because it does take courage to forgive one another but forgiveness itself is a virtue that we should all obtain.

1.      All acts of forgiveness is virtuous
2.      All acts of being able to forgive is acts of forgiveness

3.      Therefore being able to forgive is virtuous
Courage

Courage, or the ability to do something that frightens you, is a very important virtue found in a human. Courage has been very beneficial to our society. Without courage the world we know today would not be the same and many things would not exist. Without courage we would live in a world of fear and cowardliness. Having courage enables people to stand up to things that frighten or harm them. It also enables them to stand up for their own beliefs. Being able to have courage is a valuable virtue because it allows you to stand up for things and be who you want to be.
There are many important virtues in the world, i believe that courage is one of the most important ones. Doing courageous acts have made this world what it is today. It also makes you who you are as a person. If no one had courage we would all conform to the same rules and be the exact same person. We would also be living under one persons beliefs and laws that we should be setting for ourselves. For example without courage America wouldn't exist because people would still think that the world is flat and would not have gone out exploring to find out that the world is in fact round not flat.

All acts of standing up to something you believe in are virtuous
All acts of courage are acts of standing up for something you believe in
All acts of courage are virtuous

Humility

Humility, or the ability to humble oneself, is one of the most important virtues a person can have.  This virtue allows people to see their limits and respect them, the consequences to not having this virtue can be detrimental to both the person and people around the person.
Someone who lacks humility often won't see fault in his or her own mistakes, and if they do they will not apologize for them. Humility allows people to see their limits and to humble themselves to them. So if you possess this virtue and made a mistake you would be able to apologize and humble yourself to the new limit. Many people who lack humility are often overconfident and will try and take on more than they can handle, and fail to reach their set goals leaving them looking bad to others and themselves.  Lack of humility can also hurt the community and it unfortunately does every single day.  If people cannot respect their own limits it can put others in danger.  Many drunk drivers do not possess this virtue.  Instead of calling a cab or bringing along a designated driver they don't respect or can't identify that they shouldn't be driving a vehicle and unfortunately are responsible for many accidents everyday.
Humility is a virtue because without it people would be a danger to themselves and others around them.  Without this virtue many people would often exceed their limits and be destructive to themselves and others.

  1. All humbling acts are virtuous.
  2. All acts of humility are humbling acts.
  3. All acts of humility are virtuous.

Love

Love- is showing/-giving affection towards people and the world itself. It is a deep and constant feeling that you have for the people in your life and for yourself. In order to feel a deeper connection with someone you have to show love and affection towards that person. Love is shown as a constant virtue in people’s lives.

Love is a virtue because it allows you to have deep feelings about people and your surroundings. If everyone showed more love and affection towards life itself, then I believe that the world would exist to be a happier place. People always describe/ talk about how the one thing they want in life is to be loved or find true love. They say this because its something in life that brings joy and a sense of peace to themselves. To know that they are worth something to someone else and that there are people who love and care for them in this world of “hate”. Love brings positive emotions to people and if people acquired the act to love more then things in the world might not be so hated. I can easily argue how piety and courage are things that people should acquire but if people didn’t show love then how else would things come to be? You need to show affection towards things that you like or you wouldn’t be able to prove the idea that you care about what it is that you are doing. Keeping good relationships with people would only be good with this virtue because they need to know that you deeply care.  I truly believe that an act of caring more from within is something that people need in this world.  I’m not stating that people don’t show love or don’t have it but giving more and being compassionate would be a great thing to have.

1. All acts of showing affection are virtuous
2. All acts of love are showing affection
3. Therefore, all acts of love are virtuous
