Aesthetics
Art work can be portrayed in many different ways, both good and bad. Aesthetics had two different theories one being romanticism and the other formalism. The view of romanticism says that art expresses emotions that are non rational. Formalism is the view that art has the ability to guide behaviors and can show ideas that compare to reality. I believe that romanticism is the more plausiable theory of the two because art is much more then just the final piece. The story behind the piece that can express things such as non rational emotions is the true meaning of the art. The art can connect to ourlives and through many factors of it. Romanticism is very powerful in its ability to express feeling and emotions.
Explanatory breadth- romanticism does a better job explaing the work of art rather then formalism. Romanticism has much more to it in the sense that it can relate to your life and go in depth about different things. Formalism just listens and observes more then romanticism.
Explanatory depth- showing art through emotions is exactly what romanticism does going into detail more then formalism. Romanticism is art that goes deeper then what you see and can be interpreted in many ways. Formalism is viewing just what you see and not going further into the art work.
Conservativism- I believe that romanticism is more consistent because people enjoy art work that is non rational and allows them to think more in depth. Art used to be very fimiliar for the pure beauty or look but today people enjoyed going into the detail or stories of the art work.
Simplicity- I believe that the view of formalism is more simple because it doesn't go into the depth like romanticism does. Formalism even says the word formal in it which can also mean basic or simple.
1. The most plausiable explanations of art is romanticism and formalism.
2. Romanticism has more Explanatory breadth, Explanatory depth, and Conservativism where formalism has more simplicity.
3. Therefore, the best explanation of art is romanticism.

Aesthetics
Art is unique in the sense that it can be looked at and defined many different ways by many different people. In order to try and narrow this people have tried to define the value of art based on two principals formalism which states that the purpose of art is to structure reality and guide behavior through form and ideals and romanticism which says that arts purpose is to connect its viewers to a deeper thought or understanding.
Formalism values a piece of art based on how pleasing it is to the senses, how it looks or sounds, where as romanticism takes how a piece of art looks and values it based on the thoughts and understanding that piece have created. In this case i side with romanticism because taking anything for just for face value, as formalism does, and not looking into it any deeper does not develop any sort of understanding to the piece examined.
Explanatory Breadth- Romanticism explains many more forms of art than formalism does. romanticism can be used to explain forms of art that aren't purely visual such as poetry music and writing as well as arts that are visual in nature.
Explanatory Depth- Romanticism explains art in more ways than Formalism does. Romantics look at art not only for its beauty factor like formalists do, but for the thought that the piece inspires
Simplicity- Formalism is more simple than Romanticism because is only looks at a piece for its looks, it does not dive deeper into the piece like romanticism does.
Conservatism- I believe that Formalism it more popular in the world today. many people listen to music just for how it sounds not for the ideas behind it. and many people value the looks of something more than the ideas behind it because the looks are easier to see.

1. Formalism and Romanticism are the most plausible explanations for the theories of art.
2. Romanticism has more explanatory breadth and explanatory depth, whereas, Formalism has more Simplicity and conservatism,.
3. Therefore, Romanticism is the best explanation of the theory of art. Aesthetics
Art is a wonderful and beautiful thing
that shapes our world and inspires many people. Everyone can appreciate, enjoy
and even create art. But, what makes a piece of artwork good or bad? What is
the main purpose of art?
Two theories attempt to explain what the
purpose of art should be. The first theory, Formalism, states that art’s
purpose is to represent certain forms or ideals that structure our reality and
guide our behavior. The other theory, Romanticism, states that a major part of
art’s purpose is to express non-rational emotions and to make the viewers aware
of a more transcendent and mysterious reality.
While both may be plausible explanations
of art’s purpose, the best explanation is romanticism. Of course it is
interesting to observe more realistic pieces of art that represent our reality but
it is not as interesting as observing art that represents the unknown. Everyday
we see the world around us and we understand it. So, when we see our own
reality portrayed in formalistic artwork it tends to be a bit repetitive and
not as exciting. However, it is not everyday that we observe things that
represent a mysterious reality. Seeing certain artwork should evoke awe and
fascination from within us. Romantic types of artwork are able to do just that.
Romantic artwork, which includes paintings, literature or poetry, makes us
really think and question the norms of the world around us. It provides us with
the captivating idea that there is more out there beyond our own reality,
emotions and understanding.
Explanatory
breadth- Romanticism definitely has more explanatory breadth than
formalism. Romantic pieces of art do not have to represent reality. They can
represent anything in our own universe as well as aspects of other imaginary
universes. Therefore, romantic pieces of artwork have much more room for
creativity, imagination and interpretation. Romantic artwork can be absolutely
anything imaginable whereas, formalistic artwork can only be pieces of art that
coincide with things from our reality. Formalistic artwork has little room for
creativity and exploration. Therefore, formalistic artwork has much less
breadth.
Explanatory
depth- Romanticism
has more explanatory depth than formalism does. Romantic art attempts to
explain and interpret emotions and other realities that we cannot comprehend.
To think of worlds and emotions outside of our own is a deep and philosophical
concept. It makes us more in touch with our own emotions and all the nature
around us. It takes much time and creativity to make a romantic piece of art.
It also takes much more brainpower to interpret romantic pieces of art.
Meanwhile, formalistic art only explains and symbolizes things from our own
reality. This is a basic concept that we can understand and easily interpret.
It doesn’t take as much thought to interpret formalistic art either. Not as
much creativity goes into creating formalistic art as it does with romantic
artwork.
Simplicity- Formalism assumes less than romanticism
does. Formalistic types of art can be interpreted easily with little debate or
question. While romanticism has many different types of styles and forms that
evoke non-rational emotions from within us, formalism does not. Formalism only
has two types of styles- abstract and figurative formalism. But, even both of
these forms are very simple and require less thought provocation. They can only
evoke rational types of pleasure from within us. Formalism has fewer ideas to
work with than romanticism does. Therefore, formalism is the more simplistic
idea.
Conservatism- In today’s society, we can see many
different kinds of artwork that are strange, unusual and represent realities
far beyond our understanding. In older times, people were not as accepting of
art that was strange or nonrealistic. But, now-a-days people will more readily
accept art that portrays the supernatural or the unknown. Even most of the
movies or television shows in modern times are about ghosts, aliens, demons,
monsters, etc. People even like to read and appreciate romantic literature now a
days such as Edgar Allen Poe or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Abstract romantic
art pieces can be found in art exhibits and in people’s homes all across the
globe. While people may still appreciate formalistic art, it is not as popular
as romantic pieces of artwork. Therefore, romanticism is the more conservative
idea.
1. Romanticism and Formalism are the most
plausible explanations for the purpose of art.
2. Romanticism has much more explanatory
breadth, explanatory depth and conservatism, whereas formalism only has a little
more simplicity.
3. Therefore, Romanticism is the best
explanation for the purpose of art.
Formalism Vs. Romanticism
Art is the expression or application of human creative
skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,
producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
There are a
variety of standards used to judge artworks. But today we are focused on
the main two, formalism and romanticism. Romanticism is the more plausible view
because it states that art isn’t limited to rational elements but also
expresses non-rational emotions, and does so in order to make us aware of a
mysterious transcendent reality. Formalism is the view that the purpose of art
is to present formal beauty in a figurative or abstract manner and evoke a
disinterested relation to the work that gives us rational insight.
Explanatory Breadth: Romanticism has
more explanatory breadth because it explains art in a deeper form than
formalism does. When looking at a work of art most people interpret it with
emotion. They explain how the art makes them feel. Rather than just looking at
the work of art and having no emotion towards the work of art.
Explanatory Depth: Romanticism has
more explanatory depth because there’s more emotion when it comes to
romanticism. Romanticism really explains the work of art in a greater depth
than formalism. Giving romanticism more significance and more explanatory depth
than formalism.
Simplicity: Formalism has more
simplicity than romanticism because it doesn’t have to explain much. There isn’t
a lot going on with formalism, there’s no emotion and they interpret works of
art in a more rational way.
Conservatism: Romanticism is more
consistent with our current, common sense beliefs than formalism. Romanticism
is more realistic because it explains how people interpret artwork with emotion
and feelings and not just in a rational way.
1. Formalism
and Romanticism are the most plausible explanations for the theories of art.
2. Romanticism
has more explanatory breadth, explanatory depth, and conservatism, whereas,
Formalism has more Simplicity.
3. Therefore,
Romanticism is the best explanation of the theory of art.
Aesthetics
Artwork is judged in many different ways. Aesthetics came up with two of his own theories, Formalism and Romanticism. Formalism is the view that art guides our behavior and represents ideals that structure reality. Romanticism is the view that art is mainly art is to express non rational emotions. The theory that is more plausible is Romanticism due to the fact that when someone creates art it could be a beautiful piece looking at it but there is always something behind what made them create it and thus that brings more beauty. it becomes a much more powerful piece of work. it keeps us connected with ourselves and nature. it goes deeper into art and its more wide span.
Explanatory Breadth – Romanticism explains more work of art than formalism does. formalism is all about being visual or listening to the harmony of music. basically just observing the art, while with romanticism goes deeper into the art and shows the nature of art and should be supplemented with sublime. Explanatory Depth – Romanticism elucidate emotions into art work in greater detail than formalism does. romanticism view is more powerful into what the art is really all about. it shows that there something deeper within the art than just lines on a paper or words being spoken. art is not all about the looks, its also about what you can actually get from the work and the beauty behind it. Simplicity – I would say that formalism would have less assumptions due to the fact that with this theory it more about the formal beauty of the art and just the details that is within the art. its not going into the details of why it was made or the story behind the piece. a person can feel a special sense or emotion from rational art. Conservatism – Romanticism would be more consistent currently. most people will enjoy art just because. it doesn't have to be rational. the field of art has deceased over the years but now art is becoming more admired. people are doing many different things just to express it. 1. Romanticism and Formalism are the most plausible explanations of art.
2. Romanticism has much more explanatory breadth, explanatory depth and conservatism, whereas Theory 2 has a little more simplicity.
3. Therefore, Romanticism is the best explanation of art.
Aesthetics
In todays world, one of the biggest things that has been around for centuries is art. It has transformed from paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings etc. Through out the years art has been a way for people to express themselves or a way for people to share what they have seen or want to create. The two types of aesthetics that people usually interpret are formalism and the other is romanticism. Formalist believe that the interpretation of art should be based upon the form of different types of art work and how well we analyze and abstract it. It needs to structure what our reality is and deals more with the texture, form, color, arrangement of shapes, etc. Formalism deals with our rational experience with a specific type of art. While rationalism has more to do with the how well it express our non-rational emotions. It emphasizes more on how well we are able to interpret a work of art. They believe that rational beauty is not enough for us to really connect but that it needs to be more sublime and be open to different types of interpretations.
After understanding these two different types of aesthetics I would have to argue that romanticism is the more plausible way to interpret art. I think that art in every aspect being "good or bad" should make you feel some type of way. That it shouldn't be strictly based on the texture of the piece of art or how well the artist was able to abstract a form. in my opinion i think that when art can connect to you make you see or interpret a deeper meaning of the piece of work is what makes a great piece of art work. Art is a way for people to express themselves through their emotions or what they are strongly feeling. Weather its conveyed through a painting, a sculpture or photograph; art should not be stricted but open to all different types of expressions and interpretations.
Explanatory Breadth- Romanticism has more explanatory breadth then formalism.Formalism states that it has beauty but only goes on with the rational interpretation and abstract form of the art work. It doesn't have more interpretation then whats in front of you. While romanticism says that it goes beyond the rational beauty and tunes in to our emotion factor. It hits more then what we see but helps to inspire a reactions through the art work.
Explanatory Depth- Between these two aesthetics I would have to say that Formalism has more explanatory depth then romanticism. Although romanticism goes deeper within an individual and can connect to your emotions formalism is deeper because of the way we would interpret the piece of art. It has more depth because it looks closer at the type of texture, color, form and all the other types of structure that the art work holds.
Simplicity- When it come to simplicity I think that romanticism is easier to understand then formalism. Romanticism is more direct because it connects to your feelings and although it causes you to think its simpler to understand. Formalism would make you think about the abstract manner which would be harder to understand because it wouldn't be as obvious.
Conservatism-I believe in todays society romanticism would be more plausible with our current sense of belief then formalism. More people are now looking at art and asking “what is it telling you” “How does it make you feel” .They try to find a deeper meaning behind the piece of art and find what the artist was trying to explain while making this piece of art. Formalist see that a painting can be abstract but they don't try to see the deeper idea of it.
1. Romanticism and Formalism are the most plausible explanations of the interpretation of art.
2. Romanticism has more explanatory breadth, conservatism, and simplicity, whereas Formalism has more explanatory depth.
3. Therefore, Romanticism is the most plausible explanation of the interpretation of art.
Aesthetics
It's not about whether art is good or bad, but how it portrays life.
Aesthetically speaking, two theories- formalism which implies that the purpose of art is to structure reality and guide behavior through form and ideals and romanticism which implies that arts purpose is to connect its viewers to a deeper, mysterious and transcendent reality.
Yes, it is wonderful to see different parts come together to make something "beautiful", what about the mysteries of life? I side with romanticism because it is much more interesting to ponder more than what we are typically comfortable with. I support the romantic view that aesthetics should be supplemented with the sublime. Going beyond what we can interpret right away and creating a canvas for further thought and contemplation.
Explanatory Breadth - Romantic art isn't merely visual- it also includes poetry, fiction and music as well. Formal art is mostly visual(i.e pottery, furniture, etc). Romantic art makes it easy to understand an artists because there is a variety of forms and there isn't much to take apart from it other than the thought of why an artist chose the color or even the question "was this an accident?" Music can be interpreted, the moral of the story can be discussed and the purpose may be mysterious but romantic art gives its viewers, listeners, readers enough to make something of it.
Explanatory Depth - Romanticism has far more details that explain the aspects of art. Romantic art is a painting with more complex brush strokes- color, shade and shadow implying each aspect. Unlike formal works of art the elements of art in a romantic piece present themselves in a manner which is comprehensive to those who really understand the basic concepts of each aspect.
Simplicity - Formal art can be represented in two very different ways. Abstract formalism represents the direct form(color, shape) allowing the viewer to consider concept without thinking about specific similarities to other examples. Figurative formalism is more symbolic representation of a form. These types are defined for understanding. Romantic artists however, don't particularly have one or two styles of creating their art. Romantic artists represent deep relationships with nature and the belief of individualism with a deeper emotion, far beyond what we are capable of capturing right away. Formal art requires less thought, thus making it the more simpler theory of the two.
Conservatism - Although most people are familiar with the concepts of formal art because of its representation of particular things and we think we can understand its "beauty", one could say that romantic art exists more today in the same manner it did long ago, in an implicit sense. Music has hidden messages as well as novels, poems and even TV shows, activities people interest and engage themselves in, in their every life. There are many specific works of romantic art today that transcend reality and go against the grain to express more emotions than we are comfortable with.
1. Formalism and Romanticism are the most plausible explanations of Aesthetics
2. Formalism is simpler but Romanticism has more explanatory breadth, depth and in my opinion is more consistent with our current common sense beliefs whether we'd like to admit it or not.
3. Consequently, Romanticism is the most plausible explanation of Aesthetics.
