Aesthetics

Everyone has a different explanation of how they define art. Different people define art in different ways. There are two different types of aesthetics, the first is Formalism, which is the purpose of art that represent the form of ideas and guide our behavior.  Romanticism is the arts way of expressing non-rational emotions, which provides us with a deeper thought or understanding.

I think that Romanticism is more plausible.  I believe that this is more plausible because it goes into much more depth and it also includes more types of art including painting, poetry, literature, and the visual aspect of art. As well as the nature aspect of it. There is a sort of mystery to it, and it can be much more captivating then Formalism which tends to be more boring. For as with formalism we only express reality and the things we know around us.

Explanatory Breadth- Romanticism has much more explanatory breadth than formalism. Romanticism can be used to explain all types of art that formalism can’t.

Explanatory Depth- Romanticism explains art in much more depth than formalism does. They see art as more than just the look of it and more about the meaning and understanding of it. While Formalism only look at the beauty aspect of a piece of art.

Simplicity- Formalism is simpler than Romanticism because unlike Romanticism, formalism only take into account the looks of the art not the deeper meaning and understanding.

Conservatism- In today’s society, there are so many different types of arts and works that people do. While in times before people weren’t as accepting of abstract art, and new and strange things like they are today. It seemed people only thought art could be a painting or something of that sort but today more people realize that there are so many things that we can consider art and if someone spends there time and makes something unique then we can label it art.

1. Romanticism and Formalism are the most plausible explanations of art.

2. Romanticism has more explanatory breadth, explanatory depth, and conservatism, where as formalism has more simplicity.

3. Therefore, Romanticism is the best explanation of art.

  1. I believe what you mean to say is different ways to "interpret" art not "define" art. I believe you could've gone a bit more in-depth about your definition of Formalism as well. I do have to disagree with your stance on Explanatory depth even though I do side with your idea that Romanticism is the most plausible explanation of interpreting art. I believe Formalism actually indeed has more explanatory depth because although it does essentially allows for interpretation in solely abstract forms of art; it does go more in depth when discussing those abstract forms including texture of the art, line structure, shade, line perspective etc.Overall I do agree with your stance I just believe there could be some ways to alter your argument for it to be a bit stronger.
