Empathy
Empathy and it's Virtuous Aspects
Empathy is a virtue that allows one to identify and understand another person's feelings and emotional well-being. Empathy is a very important virtue that all people should either develop or work on.
Being empathetic allows a person to communicate and actually understand how people feel about certain situations when they talk to them. Everyone sees the word differently and if one has the virtue of being empathetic; the empathetic person is able to see and comprehend the other person's perspective on the world. They might not necessarily be able to directly relate to another's experiences, but they are able to understand where they are coming from. Empathy is also related to overall better communication skills. Basic communication skills are developed throughout life but having the virtue of empathy allows one to communicate with deeper understanding and helps with overall interpersonal skills. Many people confuse empathy with sympathy but there is a distinct different between the two and I believe that the virtue of being empathetic is superior than simply being sympathetic. With being sympathetic, one feels sorry or pity towards a certain person or situation. On the other end of the spectrum, one feeling empathetic towards someone or some situation allows one to actually feel for the person and try and connect with their emotional distress.
Overall, empathy is a great virtue for anyone to have. Individuals who are able to empathize with someone are able to display a deeper level of conversing and interpersonal skills. Not only are empathetic people better with communication skills, they tend to be better with relationships and just display a general better well-being throughout life.

ReplyDeleteCory,
ReplyDeleteEmpathy is definitely one of the most important traits for both an individual and a society to exhibit. As you said, it allows people to truly understand the plight of their neighbors, and this is crucial in a harmonious society. I would also point out that is the driving force behind philanthropy, which goes beyond the interactions of individual citizens to benefit the society as a whole.
