Forgiveness
Socrates conveys in the Euthyphro that piety is a
virtue, a tremendous character trait that everyone should attempt to develop. After
thoroughly going through various definitions of piety and the reasons why an
individual should have this virtue, I felt that an individual should also hold
the virtue of forgiveness. Forgiveness is overlooking mistakes, and being
willing to move forward with a clean slate and letting out anything held back. Forgiving
is being able to make a mature decision that frees both the wrongdoer as well as
the forgiver of all worries. Forgiving one’s self is part of a positive change.
We live in a world where everyone makes mistakes. Not
a single individual was created perfect. But as a whole of human beings we all
have a job, and that job is to forgive and forget. If no one ever forgave each
other and never obtained the virtue of forgiveness we would all be living going
around with grudges and anger built up inside of us for one another. The virtue
of forgiveness is what allows other very important virtues like love to exist. If
humans never contained the virtue of forgiveness this world would be filled
with bitterness for one another. Love would merely exist. Yes indeed this virtue
does have a hint of courage because it does take courage to forgive one another
but forgiveness itself is a virtue that we should all obtain.
1. All
acts of forgiveness is virtuous
2. All
acts of being able to forgive is acts of forgiveness
3. Therefore
being able to forgive is virtuous
Good examples using socrates to explain why forgiveness is a virtue

ReplyDeleteI really liked the way you referred back to our readings from class. I definitely feel that forgiveness is a virtue that people should obtain. Forgiveness is a quality for strong people, not everyone has the ability to forgive. I think maybe you could have explained more about Socrates definition of piety and what made piety such a tremendous trait and how it ties together with your virtue story. Nice job though.

I agree with the central idea that you must see past the artificial idea of perfection. Perfection is an idea nobody can reach because it is about matter and existence. To judge by this, would be as unaccurate as an idea with no evidence. Forgiveness to me is more situational and revolves around a dissenting argument when one has to accept one reality of an idea and be around that person.
