Humility, or the ability to humble oneself, is one of the most important virtues a person can have. This virtue allows people to see their limits and respect them, the consequences to not having this virtue can be detrimental to both the person and people around the person.
Someone who lacks humility often won't see fault in his or her own mistakes, and if they do they will not apologize for them. Humility allows people to see their limits and to humble themselves to them. So if you possess this virtue and made a mistake you would be able to apologize and humble yourself to the new limit. Many people who lack humility are often overconfident and will try and take on more than they can handle, and fail to reach their set goals leaving them looking bad to others and themselves. Lack of humility can also hurt the community and it unfortunately does every single day. If people cannot respect their own limits it can put others in danger. Many drunk drivers do not possess this virtue. Instead of calling a cab or bringing along a designated driver they don't respect or can't identify that they shouldn't be driving a vehicle and unfortunately are responsible for many accidents everyday.
Humility is a virtue because without it people would be a danger to themselves and others around them. Without this virtue many people would often exceed their limits and be destructive to themselves and others.

I agree with the statement that humility is an important virtue to have. The act of staying humble not only is something that is dangerous which you stated with the example of drunk drivers; staying humble is a virtue that makes people more tolerable to deal with. No one wants to talk to someone who is always bragging about their achievements, or someone who over exaggerates their importance. Staying humble is not only about safety but also just being able to maintain a relationship without the other person resenting you. Good post Mr. Gentile.
